Ukraine's airspace has been closed to civilian flights since 2022, so travellers enter overland, most commonly by train or bus from Poland, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia or Hungary.
Best time to visit: May–Jun and Sep – warm, pleasant weather for city walks.
Tougher months: December-February unless you enjoy snow – it is cold and grey, although the Carpathians offer skiing and festive traditions.

Things to do

- Wooden churches. Seek out the UNESCO-listed tserkvas of the Carpathians, built entirely of timber with tiered shingle roofs.

- Kamianets-Podilskyi fortress. Walk across the bridge to a storybook castle perched on a rocky island carved by a looping river canyon.

- Sofiyivka Park. Wander an eighteenth-century romantic landscape park of grottoes, waterfalls and lakes in Uman.
